Haircare brands have been sneaking into skincare for years, and it usually goes badly. The face products arrive as an afterthought, borrow the shampoo's fragrance, and sit on the shelf next to the conditioner hoping nobody looks too closely. Occasionally it goes the other way, and a hair house turns out to be quietly better at faces than the skincare brands it is hiding behind.

Ten formulas that survive being read properly. An Italian clay mask that costs more than most serums, a marine-extract serum sold as the alternative to retinol, a glycolic gel that prints its percentage on the front of the box, an eye cream built on mushroom mycelium, a balm that prints its entire ingredient list on the jar, and an after-sun butter carrying prickly pear, passionfruit and pistachio seed oils. Five brands, and none of them a skincare house: Oway and Simply Organic sell to salons, MyVeg is a small Italian range and Haoma is built on mycelium, and Intelligent Nutrients was founded by the man who started Aveda and then sold it.

We asked what we ask of everything: is the active named, is the dose stated, and does the ingredient list back up the sentence on the front of the box. On this page it does more often than it does on most skincare shelves, which is either a compliment to these brands or an indictment of the others.

The most expensive thing in this whole line-up, and a face mask from a haircare house, which is the entire reason the page exists. Oway builds it on two clays cut with rice bran oil and shea butter, so it calms without the tightness clay usually brings, and mallow flower does the soothing. The same farming annotations run down the list as on the hair products: naturally derived, organic, biodynamic, marked line by line.

The brand's answer to retinol, built on marine plant extracts rather than a vitamin A derivative. Bidens pilosa is the ingredient doing the work in that comparison and it turns up in a handful of serious formulas elsewhere, usually described as a plant retinol alternative, which is the brand's framing and not a claim we are making for it. Sea fennel and sea daffodil are the other two, and goji sits on top as the antioxidant.

Haoma builds everything around mycelium, the root structure of fungi, which is an unusual thing to organise a skincare brand around and the reason this entry is here rather than a fourth Intelligent Nutrients bottle. The formula itself is an oil cream: avocado, apricot kernel, sweet almond and jojoba, in that order, with prickly pear and gynostemma in the brand's own account of it. Rich, and best at night.

Gardenia cell culture is the branded part, glasswort and golden algae are the two extracts the brand credits for tone and barrier, and coconut oil, shea and safflower are what make it feel like a proper cream rather than a lotion. If the Seed Synergy lotion is too light for you in January, this is the answer.

Eighty four dollars for a hundred and fifty milliliters of body lotion is a genuinely absurd number, and we are putting it here anyway because the formula is a face formula: olive, passionflower and sweet almond oils over shea, with mallow for softness and the same farming annotations Oway uses everywhere else. It is the product on this page most likely to make you laugh at the price and then finish the tube.

Ten per cent glycolic acid, stated as a number on the front of the box, which is the single thing we most want from an acid product and get least often. The fruit acids behind it are named to the fruit, caja, mango, banana and grape, and three meristem cell cultures, centella, echinacea and edelweiss, sit alongside them. It tingles, which the brand says out loud rather than pretending otherwise.

Glycolic acid sits fairly low in the list with willow bark beside it, so the exfoliation is gentler than The Fixer, and the mask is padded out with sodium hyaluronate, panthenol and tremella, which is the mushroom sometimes called nature's hyaluronic acid. Between this and The Fixer you have the whole acid range covered at a hundred and forty four dollars.

It is waterless, which is why it behaves like a butter rather than a lotion. Simply Organic frames it as sun care; we file it as an after-sun treatment for hair and skin, because that is what the formula reads like and because no SPF is stated anywhere on it.
