What We'd Pair With a Retinoid

The retinoid is the easy part. Surviving the first six weeks is the shelf.

What We'd Pair With a Retinoid

There are no retinoids on this page. That is deliberate. These are the twelve things we would put either side of one: a cleanser that does not strip, a hydrating toner and two calming essences to layer underneath, a ceramide serum, a centella gel for skin that is irritated and oily at once, four moisturizers running from a light gel to a lamellar barrier cream, the ointment for the nights your face has stopped behaving altogether, and the mineral sunscreen that makes the whole exercise worth doing.

The moisturizers are the part people get wrong. A retinoid week is not one texture, it is three or four, and the right one is whichever your skin is asking for that night. This shelf grows. We add entries as products clear the bar, never to fill space.

Some links below are affiliate links. If you buy through them, SkinSourcer may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. It never changes what we pick or what you pay.

Anua 3 Ceramide Panthenol Moisture Barrier Cream
01

Anua 3 Ceramide Panthenol Moisture Barrier Cream

Moisturizers South Korea Approx. $17

Three ceramides with panthenol, hyaluronic acid and centella for seventeen dollars, fragrance free. If you are running a retinoid, this is the kind of cream that lets you keep running it, because the week you cannot tolerate the retinoid is the week you stop using it altogether.

  • Three ceramides plus panthenol
  • Fragrance-free
  • Cheap enough to apply generously

SkinMedica Essential Defense Mineral Shield SPF 35
06

SkinMedica Essential Defense Mineral Shield SPF 35

Sunscreens USA Approx. $40

The role this shelf was missing. A retinoid makes skin more sun-sensitive, so daily SPF stops being optional, and a hundred percent mineral filter is the least likely thing to sting a face that is already peeling. Nothing else on this shelf costs close to it, and this is the one place in a retinoid routine we would not economise.

  • Mineral filters only, which sensitised skin tolerates best
  • No tint, so it works on every skin tone on this shelf
  • The one item here worth paying more for
Texture
An untinted mineral lotion that sets to a soft finish
Key ingredients
Zinc oxide · Titanium dioxide

iUNIK Beta-Glucan Barrier Milky Toner Essence
08

iUNIK Beta-Glucan Barrier Milky Toner Essence

Essences South Korea Approx. $25

Beta-glucan is the ingredient that should be more famous than it is, a hydrator that also settles reactive skin. iUNIK builds this around it with panthenol, peptides and ginseng, fragrance free, and charges $24.99 for it.

  • Beta-glucan as the lead, not an afterthought
  • Peptides and ginseng underneath

09

iUNIK Centella Calming Gel Cream

Moisturizers South Korea Approx. $15

The moisturizer for skin that finds every cream too much: a centella-led gel that cools on contact and sits weightless on congestion-prone skin. iUNIK runs quiet internationally, but its domestic reviews on this one are consistently excellent.

  • Gel format suits oily, reactive skin
  • Centella base with a tea-tree assist
  • Weightless enough for humid months
  • Scented by botanical oils rather than parfum

  • Fragrance-free
  • Rich without the cling-film feel
