The At-Home Treatment Room: Ten Devices Trying to Move the Clinic Into Your Bathroom

LED, radio frequency, microcurrent and everything else competing with your next appointment.

The At-Home Treatment Room: Ten Devices Trying to Move the Clinic Into Your Bathroom

Counter Culture, already on The Shelf, is the clinic counter: the serums and pads a practice sends you home with. This page is the other half of the appointment, the hardware. Masks running from 80 LEDs to 770, a radio frequency wand, a microcurrent device with a red light attachment, and a percussive facial tool from the company that made the massage gun. All of it sold on the idea that the thing you book once a month could be done in your bathroom nightly.

Ten devices, from three hundred and ninety to seventeen hundred dollars, and a rule for reading them: we report what the manufacturer states, the wavelengths, the LED count, the clearance where the brand says it holds one, and we do not translate any of that into a result. A cleared device is cleared for safety and a narrow use, not for the before-and-after in the advertisement. The Déesse and the Dr Dennis Gross publish more of those numbers than most.

The honest comparison is not device versus nothing, it is device versus the appointment it replaces. A seventeen hundred dollar mask costs about the same as a year of monthly LED sessions and then keeps going; a four hundred dollar wand is roughly a single course of in-office radio frequency. Whether that math works depends on whether you will use it on a Tuesday in February when nobody is watching. We have tried to note, product by product, which ones make that easy.
