The Clean Slate: Clarifying Shampoos and Scalp Detoxes for a Real Reset

For when your hair is not dirty. It is carrying baggage.

The Clean Slate: Clarifying Shampoos and Scalp Detoxes for a Real Reset

Sometimes hair is not dry, damaged or uncooperative. It is carrying too much history. Dry shampoo, styling cream, oil, hard water, sweat and the residue of a very ambitious routine all accumulate until another layer of product makes everything worse, and buildup is good at masquerading as dryness, dullness and bad styling.

Nine products that take something off instead of adding another layer. Three scalp scrubs, from sea salt to polymer beads to apple cider vinegar, a pre-wash detox oil, a micro-exfoliating charcoal shampoo, a thermal mud shampoo, a detox wash built for city hair, a peppermint shampoo that has been resetting scalps since the nineties, and a detox dry shampoo for the days between. Used once a week or once a fortnight, not every day.

Reset first, then decide what your hair needs. Half the products bought for dry hair were bought for hair that was only dirty in a way the ordinary shampoo could not reach.

  • Sunflower and soybean lead, baobab is a real inclusion
  • Rinses out cleanly with one wash
Texture
Dry-feeling oil, thinner than it looks

Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt
02

Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt

The colorist to French cinema bottled his backstage scalp reset and it became the category's reference product: a salt scrub that physically clears buildup, then rinses out so that whatever you put on the scalp next lands on skin instead of residue. The jar most scalp routines should start with, once a week.

  • The physical reset the serums need
  • Salt does the work, oil keeps it civil
  • A Paris colorist's actual backstage tool
Texture
A salt paste that melts into a foam as you massage

Sea salt · Sweet almond oil
Fragrance
Scented

The weekly reset for people who want to feel it working. The Act+Acre exfoliator does the same job by chemistry.
