No Dupe: Makeup Nobody Has Managed to Copy

Eight products with no copy at any price, and the cheapest one is under twenty five dollars.

No Dupe: Makeup Nobody Has Managed to Copy

This is not the expensive makeup edit. We already have one of those, and the question it answers is whether a costly thing is worth its price. The question here is different and narrower: is there anything else that does this at all?

Eight products, and the answer is no in every case. What is interesting is how little that has to do with money. Four of these cost under forty dollars, and the twenty three dollar eyelash curler is as uncopied as the seventy eight dollar concealer. Two are protected by patents. One by a nine ingredient formula that reads like anyone could make it and somehow nobody does. One by being odd: a jar of four colored pearls in a category that standardised on pressed powder. The last is protected by a curve of steel that every other curler approximates and none of them match.

A note on what we left out. The most duped products in makeup are duped precisely because they are good and simple, and a famous nude lip liner very nearly made this list before we remembered that half the internet sells a version of it. Being iconic is not the same as being uncopyable, and this edit is only about the second one.

Chanel Les Beiges Water-Fresh Tint
01

Chanel Les Beiges Water-Fresh Tint

Complexion France Approx. $72

Chanel patented the technology: pigment held in micro-droplets suspended in water, not dissolved into a base. That is the whole product. Every so-called alternative is a light foundation, a different thing made a different way, and it shows the moment you put them side by side.

  • It genuinely behaves like water and still deposits color
  • Six shades, which is a limitation worth knowing before you buy
  • The brush applicator is the formula's delivery method, not an accessory
Texture
Water with pigment suspended in it as separate droplets. Shake it, and it applies with a brush rather than fingers.
Fragrance
The full ingredient list is not published on the retailer page, so we are not describing the fragrance.

Worth the seventy two dollars if your shade is one of the six.

Clé de Peau Beauté Concealer SPF 27
02

Clé de Peau Beauté Concealer SPF 27

Complexion Japan Approx. $78

What gets copied here is a texture, not a formula, which is why the dupe lists never settle on an answer. It goes on as a firm stick, warms where you press it, and sets hard enough that a powder step becomes redundant. That last part is the whole product: most cheaper concealers stay faintly mobile and end up sitting in a crease by early afternoon.

  • Sets on its own, so the powder step disappears
  • Twelve shades, more than most things at this price manage
  • The full list is not published, so we cannot tell you what is in it
Texture
Firm stick, warms on contact, sets without powder
Fragrance
The full ingredient list is not published on the retailer page, so we are not describing the fragrance.

Absurd money, until you have watched the cheaper ones crease.

Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancer
03

Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancer

Complexion USA Approx. $37

Nine ingredients, most of them unglamorous: polybutene, mineral oil, mica, a little jojoba and honey. The interest is entirely in the consistency. It sits where you put it as a solid, then thins under a warm finger into whatever coverage you want, which is how one pot ends up doing three jobs. It is also heavy, so anyone chasing a skin-like finish should look at the Chanel tint here instead.

  • One pot works as foundation, concealer and corrector
  • Fragrance-free, and the whole list runs to nine items
  • Heavy, and not pretending otherwise
Texture
A solid balm in a small pot, warmed on the back of the hand and thinned to whatever coverage you want
Key ingredients
Polybutene · Mineral oil · Mica · Jojoba seed oil · Honey · Tocopheryl acetate
Fragrance
No parfum in the ingredient list, and the brand states it is fragrance free.

Built for a kit, and it behaves like one.

Kulfi Beauty Lassi Lips Staining Lip Liner
04

Kulfi Beauty Lassi Lips Staining Lip Liner

Lip USA Approx. $24

A liner that is supposed to disappear is a contradiction, and it is the reason this has no equivalent. Every other lip liner is built to hold an edge. This one is built to lose it, fading down into a stain the brand says holds for around ten hours, so the thing you bought for definition ends up doing the opposite on purpose.

  • It solves the problem of the liner outliving the lipstick, which every other liner creates
  • Twenty four dollars, the cheapest lip product in this edit
  • The shade range was built around deeper skin first rather than extended to it later
Texture
Creamy pencil that goes on as a liner and then sinks into a stain
Key ingredients
Peptides · Vitamin E
Fragrance
The full ingredient list is not published on the product page, so we are not describing the fragrance.

Line the lip, then forget the line. The stain is what you bought.

Benefit Cosmetics Benetint Rose Tinted Lip & Cheek Stain
05

Benefit Cosmetics Benetint Rose Tinted Lip & Cheek Stain

Color USA Approx. $32

A watery rose tint that dries down into a stain. Because it does not sit on top as a layer, it will not slide off a cheek by lunch, and it works on a lip with no liner underneath. The trade is control. It goes on wetter than you expect and sets fast, so it wants blending immediately or not at all.

  • Stains rather than layers, so it stays where you put it
  • One bottle covers cheeks and lips convincingly
  • Sets fast, which punishes a slow hand
Texture
Watery rose tint with a doe-foot applicator, dries down to a stain
Fragrance
The full ingredient list is not published on the listing, so we are not describing the fragrance.

Easy to love, easy to overdo.

Shu Uemura Iconic Eyelash Curler
06

Shu Uemura Iconic Eyelash Curler

Makeup Japan Approx. $24

The curve is the product. It matches the arc of most eye sockets closely enough to reach the lashes at their root without catching the lid, which is the failure every cheaper curler eventually makes. A silicone refill comes in the box, and the pad is the only part that wears out.

  • The arc reaches the root without pinching
  • A refill pad comes in the box
  • The cheapest thing in this edit, at under twenty four dollars.
Form
A curved steel curler with a silicone pad, refill included

Change the pad, not the curler.

Guerlain Météorites Setting & Finishing Pearls of Powder
07

Guerlain Météorites Setting & Finishing Pearls of Powder

Complexion France Approx. $75

The correction happens in the mix rather than in the formula. Four tinted pearls get picked up together on a big brush so the colors cancel on the way to the face, instead of arriving pre-blended into a single shade. It is a genuinely different mechanism from a pressed powder. It is also loose powder in a glass jar, which travels badly and spills.

  • Four colors doing a corrector's job on the way to the skin
  • Does not flatten a base the way a pressed powder can
  • Loose pearls in a jar, and a poor traveller
Texture
Loose pearls in four colors, swirled together on a big brush and dusted over
Fragrance
The full ingredient list is not published on the retailer page, so we are not describing the fragrance.

Four pearls doing what one pressed powder still cannot.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Finishing Powder
08

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Finishing Powder

Makeup USA Approx. $58

The claim here is unusually literal. The pigment diffuses light rather than sitting on skin as color, and the technology is patented, which is why the blurring powders that followed can copy the description of the finish but not the mechanism behind it. The effect is subtle in flat daylight and unmistakable on camera.

  • A patented mechanism rather than a finish claim
  • Micro-fine, so it never reads as powder
  • Subtle in daylight, obvious on camera
Texture
A micro-fine finishing powder that reads as lighting rather than makeup
Key ingredients
Photoluminescent pigment technology
Fragrance
Not stated

Sold on physics, and the physics holds.
